Abstract :

In recent years life expectancy in Spain has increased considerably, meaning that 18% of the population is currently older than 65 (those over 80 account for 6%) and it is predicted that in just fifteen years a quarter of the population will be over 65. Some estimates even indicate that Spain will have the third most elderly population in the world by 2050.

In addition to this, as people grow older they tend to suffer from more chronic diseases that gradually reduce their quality of life. As people reach old age it is therefore common for them to suffer from various complaints, resulting in frailty and dependence. Moreover, although the available data suggest that 72% of over-65s are patients with chronic diseases, this phenomenon is not exclusively linked to aging, as chronic diseases also affect children and young people.
