Abstract :

In 1920, Alexander Fleming accidentally discovered a substance that could attack certain bacteria. Years later, it was observed that colonies of the common bacteria Staphylococcus aureus were wiped out by a mold that had grown in the same Petri dish, determining that this mold (Penicillium) creates a substances, which was named as Penicillin, which could dissolve bacteria. The results were published in 1929 [1] and it was first used in clinical practice in the '40s. The appearance of Penicillin gave rise to the era of antibiotics.
